My latest proper club night I have been to was Ryan Elliott from Berlin’s Ostgut Ton playing alongside Charles Green at Patterns in Brighton. Since October 2019 I’m a prisoner of my own home, not because the event was bad but thanks to the weather. As many would say, that’s not an excuse! I agree.
Let’s go back to that day and overall I must say that the event was a very good experience, specially the music selection. The tickets were available to purchase on Resident Advisor which is an online platform I always trust when it comes to events, you can always expect high quality acts within the electronic music scene and they make it accessible to everyone. There I can buy tickets to fabric, Printworks, Village Underground and even for clubs abroad. By doing this you save a lot of time queuing and you also save money at the door. It’s very easy, just download the app, buy the tickets online and show them at the door. I did that and it was very quick to get in.
Once I got into Patterns, it was still very early and the main floor was pretty much empty with everyone staying upstairs in the bar listening to some funk and disco. Until around 1am I kept shifting floors and I was a little bit concerned if Ryan Elliott would start playing only for a small number of people.
What I did not know was that the upstairs bar was closing at 1am so everyone was pretty much “forced” to come downstairs and listen to house and Detroit techno. In the beginning you could feel that a lot of people were there without exactly knowing where they were. In terms of age groups, the night was a success because you could see people from 18 up until 50 there. But again, Brighton has a lot of students and I think most of those students were following the hype and ended up leaving much earlier. The older crowd stayed until 4am when the event finished. Personally, I consider an event very successful when you have a good balance between younger and older crowds and everyone enjoys it but that happens when the music is good.
The music matched what I was expecting from seeing Ryan Elliott and Charles Green playing together, they started with house, moved on to the good old techno from Detroit with a cheeky “Good Life” by Kevin Saunderson in the middle and to finish, some old school jungle.
Another thing to mention was the work from the sound engineer, I have been to other venues and unfortunately the only thing that Patterns lacks of is a better sound system but every time I go there it’s amazing to see how the engineers do their best in terms of sound quality and for this event in particular where the bass was heavy, the sound engineer did a great job.
At the end of the night, I approached both Charles and Ryan and they were very friendly with great energy. I would recommend Patterns to anyone who’s a fan of this type of music because every week you can expect high quality sounds and good vibes.

Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you Ryan Elliott!
